The proceeds from SPX’s annual festival are used to support a variety of charitable initiatives, such as:
- The Comics Book Legal Defense Fund
Our longest standing relationship is with the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The CBLDF acts as a bulwark against censorship for comics creators of all stripes and provides an important voice in support of creative freedom. We’re extremely proud to have the CBLDF as the major beneficiary of the SPX Festival.
In addition to a monetary donation provided to the CBLDF taken from the festival proceeds, SPX also provides a form for an art auction conducted by the CBLDF and featuring original art from artists in attendance The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund honors the memory of former SPX executive Director, Jeff Alexander with an annual benefit auction in his name.
- The Graphic Novel Gift Program
With the overwhelming support of several independent comics publishers, the Small Press Expo began an endowment program for local library systems. Each year SPX selects several libraries for participation and these libraries an outright gift of graphic novels as selected by the libraries acquisitions staff from a list provided by participating publishers.
In 2011, SPX piloted the program in our home district, Montgomery County, Maryland, delivering more than 200 graphic novels into 20 local libraries. We hope to expand the program nationwide. For 2012, out intention is to extend an endowment to library systems in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
- Special Awards and In-Need Assistance
From time to time Small Press Expo will make direct awards to artist and institutions that the SPX board of directors determine to be worthy of special consideration or facing an immediate need. Typically these gifts are made public only at the discretion of the recipient.
