SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program
The Small Press Expo (SPX) Graphic Novel Gift Program is targeted to public and academic library systems in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, the home of the Small Press Expo. This annual program provides and outright of gift of graphic novels and comics as selected by the staff of the chosen library system. The SPX Executive Committee internally selects the library system to be gifted, we do not accept grant applications or recommendations for the selection process.
The graphic novel buyer for the given library system is given a budget determined by Small Press Expo to purchase books from a selected list of publishers. The publisher list provided to the library buyer comes from the list of exhibitors that have appeared at past Small Press Expo festivals.
The goals of goals of the Graphic Novel Gift Program are to:
- Expand the reach of graphic novels to readers of all ages utilizing public and school libraries.
- Promote learning and literacy through the availability of graphic novels at local libraries.
- Provide library systems with additional resources by which they can purchase graphic novels and comics.
The 2011 recipient of the Graphic Novel Program is the Montgomery County Public Library System, which received over 230 books for its library patrons to be distributed across its 22 branches.
